Record crops for Romania this year, despite the bad weather

Despite the bad weather Romania has experienced one of the best years for agriculture. Local farmers harvested 7.37 million tons of wheat and barley, slightly above the 2013 crop. As announced by the Agriculture Ministry, the rape seed production exceeded 1 million tons this year, a record since 1970. The heavy rains in June posed problems for the wheat crop, but were beneficial for corn and sun flower crops, “and we hope to be again Europe’s champions,” said Agriculture Minister Daniel Constantin. However, heavy rain reduced the quality of the harvested wheat, farmers complain. Agriculture is one of the most important sectors of Romanian Economy. It accounts for over 6% of Romanian GDP and employs about 29% of local labor force.Tags: ,
